A modern take on blue eyed soul, the tracks of Caught a Ghost feature elements of classic motown and stax volt compositions with influences from dubstep, 90s rap and contemporary electronica.
Los ANgeles based trio Caught a Ghost pulls from different genres, creating a unique pastiche of ambient, psychedelic and electronic sounds. The first album from the Jesse Nolan, Tessa Tompson (also an actress, most notably in buzzy Sundance satire Dear White People) and Stephen Edelstein debuted in 2014.
And while all that is true, some elements of that description are more prominent than others, and for such a complicated description Caught a Ghost's sound is very natural, uncomplicated, truly instrumental and pure. The electronica part of the previously mentioned description is one of those not so prominent elements in their sound and in a very good way because, yes, modern elements in their music are there, but they do present a retro feel that makes them sound refreshing in these modern times overwhelmed with too many synthetic and electronic sounds.
For the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the original release of "Human Nature", we're really happy to re-release this album. in times where the original album sold for 500,-$ on Discogs, it was about time to put it out on wax again. This time with a special limited edition on clear blue vinyl w/ bone white splatter.
With "Nothing for you here" and "Better" there are two tracks on this edition that havent been on the original release 2014. These two songs get released on vinyl for the very first time.
The Amazon Prime original series Bosch uses the band's song "Can't let go" as its theme song.

Seeing the BellRays live is a revelation of what the rock music should be: an aggressive and soulful guitar-driven music that you feel in your guts. The BellRays have been channelling the true spirit of rock and soul since 1990, with this being their fourth blood-letting release. As expected this record oozes a genuine passion, combining the best of a 60s soul review with the fury of garage rocks greatest. Just imagine a young Tina Turner fronting the MC5 and youll be getting close. But make no mistake, front woman Lisa Kekaula is no mainstream soul singer. Although her warm traditional R&B vocal stylings are big, lush and beautiful, her ferocity is uncompromising. When her rock growl rumbles the floor, you best pay attention, there are no options available. This is a band preaching the continuation of the rocknroll tradition in all its purity, anger and visceral power. The BellRays are on a self-professed mission to save rock music from itself and they need a witness.
This album will blow your speakers and your mind at the same time... intense fuzz-face guitars, over-the-top fervant black soul preaching by one of the best female singers in the world and a pace that just will not back down. One of the few bands who can be legitimately compared to the MC5 in terms of intesity...

“Christian Scott ushers in new era of Jazz” (NPR)
Is this the future sound of black American jazz – an inclusive yet rhythmically complex groove based music that owes as a much to black urban culture – predominantly hip hop and trap music rhythms – as it does to jazz improv techniques and rhythms? It's certainly interesting that similar elements swim through the music of Robert Glasper and Kamasi Washington, who along with Scott are currently big box office, pulling-in substantial new audiences for their music. Ruler Rebel is the first album of a trilogy celebrating 100 years of recorded jazz, and will be followed by Diaspora and Emancipation Procrastination later. At the heart of this music are polyrhythmic grooves that might come from jazz, New Orleans black Indian music, trap, Malian rhythm Kassa Soro and the interplay between an SPD drum machine and live drumming. Largely featuring Scott's trumpet, the record introduces his articulate and frequently eloquent voice as the narrator of Ruler Rebel, much like the Persian Princess Scheherazade narrating her tales of the mysterious east to Sultan Shahriar over one thousand and one nights. A key track is ‘Encryption’, a summation of Scott's direction of travel on the album. Here the running rhythm is derived from the New Orleansian Afro-Indian culture married with Malian Kassa Soro. This is in turn is layered with SPD-SX electronic drum machine and sampling machine played by Joe Dyson and Cory Fonsville that introduce rhythmic elements from trap and hip hop. Sounds complex? Well it is, but it works. Other highlights include ‘New Orleansian Love Song’ and ‘New Orleansian Love Song II’ and a celebration of Afro-Indian culture on ‘The Coronation of K. Atunde Adjuah’.
Reviews:
Jazzwise: Rating: ★★★★
The Guardian: ★★★★
Financial Times: ★★★★
Treblezine: Ruler Rebel contains some of Scott’s most interesting blends of styles to date, yet whatever elements he pulls from—trap, trip-hop, jungle, rock, psychedelia—are always in the service of the composition.
Ransom Note: The album is a great achievement. In this world wherein economic inequality has come to define our everyday life and politics, music previously associated with select social constructs now has the umph and presence of Hip Hop.

The Magnificent are eight Hollywood rock-scene veterans who have previously hidden their secret love for powerhouse rhythm and blues, but now reveal it to the world in a savage show. The band’s songbook is loaded with deep-in-the-crates soul gems from the mid-sixties to the early seventies. Playing choice selections from the likes of Solomon Burke, Rex Garvin and Big Mama Thornton, the band rearranges the songs to showcase their individual specialties, while keeping the essentials of the material in place, particularly the non-stop danceable rhythms.
The Magnificent's full length release "Monolithic" includes original material alongside covers from the likes of Eddie Floyd, Janis Joplin, and the Knight Brothers. Recorded at Kitten Robot studio in Historic Filipinotown with Paul Roessler (Screamers, Twisted Roots), the tracks were mastered by soul veteran Rodney Mills at his Masterhouse lab in Atlanta. Rodney’s track record includes sessions with soul godfathers such as the Meters, James Brown and George Clinton.
With two frenetic front men backed by a six-man wrecking crew and two torso-twisting go-go dancers, the Magnificent are a revue to be reckoned with, a red-hot retro blast of shotgun soul.
The record is limited to only 300 copies on rhythm & blue vinyl. So what you’re waiting for?

It’s time to testify, brothers & sisters and it’s about time. It’s so about time to put this gem out on vinyl. Properly! It was released twice on small editions before, but – no offense – they both sounded terrible. Now the tapes been re-mastered by Jürgen Hendlmeier and put right on wax, brand new artwork included.
In our eyes this is one oft he best and most powerful and pure garage rock albums ever. You have to hear it to know what I’m talkin about. GET DOWN – OR GET OUT! …and listen to a fine collection of soulful, rocking collection of raw songs that make you move(, unless you’re dead). With this album the Sideburns became the finnish leaders oft he new wave of scandinavian Rock’n’Roll (along the Hellacopters [from Sweden], Gleucifer & Turbonegro [both from Norway]). The Hellacopters actually covered „Ungrounded Confusion“ from this album!
This collection of songs is well inspired by bands such as the Sonics or the Wailers. And in the 90s and early 2000s more than ever before, bands everywhere are claiming the MC5 as their primary influence. Most bands, however, don't really get the sound right, or somehow lose the spirit of the music in a '70s rock haze. What makes the Flaming Sideburns feel authentic is that they understand the grooves that make this type of music work, and there's a ton of real enthusiasm behind it all. Songs like "Testify" are obviously inspired by Tyner and Co., but have a fresh energy that makes this old sound worth listening to. The mid-fi production also keeps the music sounding exciting and hot, without getting too heavy. They reach back a little in time to the mid-'60s with covers of the Wailers' "Out Of Our Tree" and the Electras' "Action Woman." Also super rocking is the wild "Jaguar Girls" and the spasm inspiring "Rock N Roll Boogaloo." If you like Detroit-style rock'n'roll with an unpretentious '60s edge to it, the Flaming Sideburns are for you.
The record is limited to only 300 copies on half transparent blue & half transparent red vinyl. So what you’re waiting for?

Ugly Duckling presents their fifth full-length album Moving at Breakneck Speed. After more than a decade in the music business, Young Einstein, Andy Cooper and Dizzy Dustin are well accustomed to the recording process. For their latest LP, the boys dug deep into their bag of tricks to create what they feel is their most dynamic and complete release to date. Moving at Breakneck Speed is an exciting and musically exotic adventure story that has our desperate heroes circling the globe to outrun an evil gang of super-criminals determined to put an end to UD once and for all. The record is made up of 14 power packed tracks that showcase Ugly Duckling’s classic production sound as well as the flavorful and humorously soulful vocal styles of Dizzy and Andy. “By the time you work on your fifth record, you ought to know how to do it, right?” asks Andy, “I think we put all of the pieces together to make a really, really good album”.
We've made a habit of finding talented artists to create our artwork and this album is certainly no exception. This time around we enlisted the help of Justin Ridge. A native of smoggy Southern California, Justin has enjoyed making silly drawings and directing on animated shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star Wars: Clone Wars, The Cleveland Show, and most recently Black Dynamite: The Animated Series. You can see more of his stuff on his website at justinridgeart.com. It has been a pleasure working with Justin on this venture and look forward to seeing what the future has in store for this very gifted animator.
Also contributing his talents to this album is photographer Noel J. Hadley. We have Noel to thank for the awesome photos that you see displayed throughout the site. Noel's specialty is actually wedding photos but he was kind enough to join us on a fun-filled afternoon in Los Angeles to capture the theme images for the new album. He was also along for the ride during the filming of the Elevation video, set to be released later this year. You can check out photos from the video shoot on Noel's blog.
In addition, there are a number of people who donated their time and effort to help bring this album to life. Comedian TJ Miller can be seen in the Elevation video, a combination live-action/cartoon which will be animated by Justin Ridge. We would also like to thank Andy Carpenter, Jon St. James, Josh Barlow, Josh Fischel, Victor, Dago, Tamika, Tiko, Hiroko, Missy, Brian, Ashley-Dominique, Clout, and the entire Tru Beatz Crew for their contributions. You are all valued members of the UD family.

FATSO JETSON was formed in Palm Desert, CA, in 1994 and are often credited as one of the fathers of the desert strain of stoner rock made most famous by their slightly younger neighbors Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. While musically similar to some of their stoner brethren, FATSO JETSON incorporate a broader variety of musical influences that includes punk, blues, jazz and surf music. That is not to say that the band isn't capable of dishing out supremely heavy riffs... Certainly grounded in dense hard rock, FATSO JETSON experiment with many musical textures, angular instrumental epics, and bizarre lyrics to create a punk, blues art rock all their own.
In 1995, the group recorded their debut "Stinky Little Gods" and followed that up in 1997 with "Power of Three" (both appeared on SST). Brant Bjork briefly joined up as second guitarist and appeared on two 7" releases. The band then teamed up with Bongload Records, who released FATSO JETSON's third full-length, "Toasted", in 1998.
Guitarist and old friend Gary Arce joined the band to record thier fourth LP "Flames for All" in 2000 for Artist Frank Kozik's Mans Ruin Label. FATSO JETSON also contributed to "The Desert Sessions" releases that Josh Homme organized, bringing desert musicians and other creative like minded rock musicians together to collaborate. It was Homme's record label Rekords Rekords that released the next FATSO JETSON album in 2001 "Cruel and Delicious". For this session the band was joined by Vince Meghrouni on Sax and Harp, adding a new dimention to FATSO's hard to pin sound. The band continues with this line up in 2009.
A new full length LP was released in Feburary 2010, followed by a European tour in April including a debut at Holland's Roadburn Festival. They came back again on the old continent in 2012 for a very successful tour with highlights shows like Duna Jam, Paris and Stoned From the Underground festival. They returned in Europe in 2013 with their peers Yawning Man, and again in February 2015! They also released a split album with Space lords Farflung this spring.
There must be something in the sand of sweltering Palm Desert, a California town that has birthed Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, as well as Fatso Jetson. Like Kyuss/QOTSA, Fatso Jetson built a name for themselves by putting their own unique spin on the Sabbath sound, but unlike their counterparts, larger than life singer/guitarist Mario Lalli's true love lies in both jazz (Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy) and experimental rock (Frank Zappa, Devo). On paper, this conglomeration of different styles sounds like the perfect recipe for a train wreck, but it somehow all comes together on disc, as evidenced by the trio's 2003 offering, Cruel & Delicious. Issued on old pal Josh Homme's label, Rekords Rekords, the trippy songs perfectly fit the feel of the album's cover (a sun-bleached photo of a long stretch of desert highway), especially such standouts as the saxophone free for all "Drinkin Mode," the melodic "Light Yourself on Fire," the bouncy instrumental "Heavenly Hearse," a barely recognizable cover of the Devo obscurity, "Ton O Luv," and the jazzoid freak-out, "Pig Hat Smokin." Cruel & Delicious is an enjoyable slice of hard rock, well off the beaten path.

"Reporting a Mirage", the title of the Gods of Blitz album aptly describes the fast-paced history of this band. A nationally quite unique story of great overtaking maneuvers and successes. Nonetheless, one that is based on a tremendous amount of work. Jens Freudenberg (guitar), Olli Wong (guitar), Jakob Kiersch (drums) and Sebastian Barusta Gäbel (vocals, bass) worked like crazy for two years. Let's just take the first months after the band was founded in autumn 2004: only a few months passed from their surprising signing with Four Music to the recording of their debut “Stolen Horse” and the first tour as the opening act for Maximo Park.
They allowed themselves a single break of two weeks afterwards, otherwise they rushed through the phases of a new band like the instruments
through their extremely crisp three-minute crackers. In 2006 alone they played successfully on the big stages at Hurricane, Southside, Taubertal
and Frequency Festival in their first festival season.
A punch with a sophistication has already judged an Australian music magazine about the debut. And it is a statement that can be transferred directly to “Reporting a Mirage”, a remarkably timeless, crisp, engaging, entertaining and, by local standards, unquestionably unique international album.
In 2008 the band broke up and in 2020 there was the much-anticipated reunion. In keeping with this, this is probably the band's best album on vinyl.

At the end of the day, man oh man, this record is a non-stop party. Sweaty, pissed off and joyous.
In 2005, Firewater's Tod A embarked on what would become a three year sabbatical through the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia. He had recently split with his wife; George W. Bush had just been re-elected; New York, his home for the last 20 years, had become a cold and foreign place. He wasn't even sure he wanted to make music anymore. "I was extremely depressed. The NYC skyline looked like bad wallpaper to me. It was either kill myself or hit the road," he says. He put everything he owned in storage and left NYC with a few clothes and a laptop.
The journey Tod undertook would challenge him creatively in ways he couldn't have imagined in its planning stages. "I traveled overland starting in Delhi, India, across the Thar Desert, then through Rajasthan, onward through the Punjab, and into Pakistan," he recounts. "I had originally planned to continue overland through Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey, ending in Istanbul." But things didn't go exactly as planned. Along the way he was drugged, robbed, detained, and later struck down with severe intestinal problems. Travelers were disappearing along the road to Kabul. As Tod puts it, "I was forced to end my trip at the Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, due to general ill health and the unnerving likelihood of kidnapping."
Recording with a single microphone and a laptop in his pack, he captured performances with a vast array of musicians across India and Pakistan--and eventually Turkey and Israel. Bhangra and sufi percussion would form the basis for the songs he wrote along the way--songs about the world he left behind ("This Is My Life", "Electric City"), politics ("Borneo", "Hey Clown"), and dislocation ("6:45", "Feels like the End of the World"). Tod's acerbic wit shines on The Golden Hour, elucidating both the beauty and the absurdity of the world.
Firewater drummer Tamir Muskat (of Balkan Beat Box) produced, mixed and played on the album, along with a strange cast of characters from 5 different countries. Tod tells the story of the trip in a short video, which includes footage from his travels. He also chronicled his experiences on his travel blog, Postcards from the Other Side of the World.
All this makes for a fine and interesting story. But at the end of the day, man oh man, this record is a non-stop party. Sweaty, pissed off and joyous.

Finally it’s here! After many years, the repress arrived. This time how it was supposed to be. With new cover artwork and newly mixed songs.
It's a rare but exhilarating occasion when you put on a new LP and are utterly blown away by what you hear. Every now and then, music makes you feel magically alive -- makes you want to jump around, pound your fist in the air, and shout "Oh, yeah!" Listening to Grand Fury, the second major release by Los Angeles quartet the Bellrays, is such an experience.
Imagine the Funhouse-era Stooges fronted by a female R&B singer instead of Iggy Pop, and you'll have a vague understanding of what the Bellrays call "maximum rock 'n' soul". Although they've drawn comparisons to the Stooges or the MC5 fronted by Tina Turner, Etta James, or Aretha Franklin, the Bellrays rightly point out that soul was an important element in those Detroit-area punks' sounds. So, in some ways, the Bellrays are just bringing out an element of early punk music that was there all along. Nonetheless, the resulting sound is startlingly unique.
Lead singer Lisa Kekaula has also sung jazz, and it's obvious she has technical skill, but she tears into these songs with a venom and passion that is pure rock 'n' roll. Bandmates Tony Fate, Bob Vennum, and Ray Chin provide a raw, blues-edged backing that is loose enough to allow Kekaula considerable room to go wild.
And does she ever. With her raucous voice and the aggressive songs penned by guitarist Fate, Kekaula makes you believe she'd sooner spit in your face than look at you. "I'm stuck inside a moment / Can't find my way out / And time keeps draggin' on" she sings on "Fire on the Moon", but the confident way she spits out the words makes you believe she could claw her way out of anything. Likewise, Kekaula's indictment of "Stupid Fuckin' People" is so fierce it's almost scary. When she snarls, "Stupid fuckin' people always get in my way / Want to ruin my piece of the world" you know you'd better get out of her way. The only time this sonic assault slows down is on "Have a Little Faith in Me", a sexy soul number that Janis Joplin would have been proud to sing.

Reform School Girl however is the full package. Nick Curran was painstakingly dedicated to making this album authentic through and through to the 50′s era. From the tone, to the style, to the energy, to the licks and lyrics, to the recording equipment and the recording technique, you can go through this album and not find one single element that isn’t indigenous to the 1950′s era, and by doing so, Curran awakens that inherent yearning embedded in all of us to transport back to that time and feel the warmth, positivity, and coolness that permeated that period in America.
This is the legacy of Nick Curran, along with his enthusiasm and his amazing guitar licks. From his debut album Fixin’ Your Head in 1999, Curran was able to take you back to a better place and time. He was the time travel agent for those old souls born in the wrong era.
Rest In Peace Nick Curran, you done good. You made life down here a little happier, but apparently Heaven needs a rock n’ roll revitalization too.”

Just in July the band has been on a great tour through central europe and now their latest album will be finally out on vinyl: Mother Tongue are not the usual band. The four guys from Los Angeles are not just talented players, but also got characteristic voices (at least 3 of them). That alone doesn’t say much about Mother Tongue. For this band the music has to speak. And it does. Just like singer and bassist Davo recently shouted at one of their shows: „It’s your show, not ours!“ (He was talkin about the audience btw.)
Mother Tongue have put all their energies
together, cause they’re driven by the will to bring their music to the people. Their music is a fight against inner & outer demons. They’re constantly lookin for a common ground
for their manifold influences, cause they have a "Monster to feed". A challenge they can just win together. "Together released" is a programmatic title for that cause. In less than 3
minutes they break loose and celebrate a psychedelic inferno. On the other side there are the dark colors of the songs of Mother Tongues
latest album. You won’t find any superficial fun, radio songs or summer days without clouds on "Follow the trail".
